The Global GreenTrotters

3 of the 'untoucahable' children at Velatur orphanage! It was in Kenya that I conceived the idea of a charity/fund raising team that tours the world helping and developing local communities as well as playing sport. In September 2008, I will go to India to do some voluntary development work at an orphange in rural India. I will teach English, sport, maths and anything else I can offer. I will help build a new block at the orphanage so that they can take in more children and I will do whatever I can. As such it seems the perfect opportunity to take my idea into reality. I aim to find a team of people, some cricketers and some with no interest at all in cricket to join me at the orphanage. I am looking for volunteers who will come and give their time whether that be 3 weeks, 2 weeks, 1 week, 3 days or 1 day. During our time at the orphanage we will help in any way we can and also play 2 cricket matches - one against the 'untouchables' (Indian people, so poor they fall bellow the lowest class in the caste system) and one against a local team.


The initial idea is that we take a 20 strong group of 'players' and 'supporters' (tea ladies, physios, cheerleaders and fans) and stay for 3 weeks helping the local community in an area where 40 pairs of hands will come in very usefully indeed. We will work hard and play harder. The old 'work hard - play hard' mantra will be the Global GreenTrotters slogan. Volunteers can stay for 1 week or 3. I will be there for all 3! I am hoping Shilpa Shetty, Jade Goody and Al Gore will come and take part! The Global GreenTrotters are a nonprofit charitable organisation and part of the Blighty foundation. The money raised will go directly to the orphanage. 100% of the money will go to the orphanage - all admin cotst will be borne by Blighty foundations partner company, Blighty Creations. The tour will be known as the '3rd world debt tour'. This will be our tours 'theme' and topic for discusion eg in the evenings after a hard days work. The reason is that I want to learn more about 3rd world debt as it is known. This is a chance for us to meet, help the orphanage, play some sport and also learn from one another about 3rd world debt and its implications with regards to poverty and development of poorer nations.
